WHO Declares Monkeypox As Global Health Emergency As Over 70 Countries Record Cases

23 July 2022 - 10:20am

Monkey Pox

The World Health Organisation, on Saturday, officially declared the Monkeypox disease as a global health emergency.
The global health body noted that it activated its highest alert level for the growing Monkeypox outbreak, making the virus a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Monkeypox, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, is a rare viral zoonotic infectious disease (i.e. an infection transmitted from animals to humans) that is endemic in areas in and near tropical rainforests in Central and West Africa.
“It is caused by the Monkeypox virus which belongs to the same Orthopoxviral genus and Poxviridae family of viruses as the Variola virus (Smallpox virus), the Vaccinia virus (used in smallpox vaccine for eradication programme), and the cowpox virus (used in earlier generations of smallpox vaccines) and some other viruses.
While addressing the press, the WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, noted that the decision came as a result of the rise in cases of the Monkeypox virus.
“We have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little,” Tedros said. “For all of these reasons, I have decided that the global Monkeypox outbreak represents a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.”
The PUNCH reports that, globally, no fewer than 16,000 cases of Monkeypox have been reported across more than 70 countries so far this year, and the number of confirmed infections rose 77 per cent from late June through early July, according to the WHO data.
Reports from Nigeria, according to the NCDC, confirmed 101 cases of Monkeypox in 2022, its highest figure since 2017 when the disease re-emerged.

PDP Candidate, Atiku Is Law Breaker, Ill-Prepared To Be President, Bungled TV Interview – Tinubu Camp

23 July 2022 - 10:15am

The presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, has described his counterpart in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, as law breaker who admitted cheating the system for decades.
Atiku had during an interview on Arise TV on Friday, claimed he fell out with Tinubu in 2007 because he (Atiku) was opposed to a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.

“My fundamental disagreement with Asiwaju since 2007 was on the issue of Muslim-Muslim ticket. That was my fundamental disagreement and departure from Asiwaju.
“Together with Asiwaju, we formed ACN and I was given a ticket in Lagos and he insisted to be my running mate and I said no, I am not going to have a Muslim-Muslim ticket and because of that he switched his support to the late Umaru Yar`Adua and that was the departing point and of course, it is also a fact that when Buhari emerged in Lagos in 2015 that I also opposed a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
“I opposed it and my opposition actually reinforced the decision of President Buhari to pick a Christian running mate. So, I have all along opposed that. I don’t believe in that. I don’t believe it is right for a country like Nigeria that is multi-ethnic, multi religious that there should be balancing of interests, whether religious or otherwise,” he had said.
Reacting through his campaign organisation in a statement on Saturday, Tinubu faulted most of the claims made by the former vice president.
The APC candidate described his opponent as a lawbreaker.
“In the interview, Alhaji Atiku exposed himself as a man who is not prepared for the job he is applying for and a man who cannot be entrusted with our commonwealth. He was flippant in his response to important questions about his record of service and how he made money while serving in Customs. He muddled up facts and exhibited befuddling absence of mind”, Tinubu said through the Director, Media and Communication of his campaign organisation, Bayo Onanuga.
“The PDP candidate is a law breaker: It was most shocking Atiku admitted that he cheated the system for decades and engaged in gross misconduct as a government worker. As a customs officer at the Idi-Iroko border, Atiku revealed that he ran a commercial taxi service, claiming ‘there is no law stopping public officers from doing business in Nigeria.
“We found this to be untrue. Every officer in the civil service is expected to comply with a code of conduct and service rules which bar civil and public servants from engaging in private business while in government employment to the detriment of the service he/she is employed to render to the public. The 1999 constitution further codifies this in Part I, Fifth Schedule, Section of 2 (b).
“It says a public officer shall not, except where he is not employed on full-time basis engage or participate in the management or running of any private business, profession or trade. The rules however allow a public officer to engage in farming.
“We wonder which rule or which law Atiku was relying upon for his gross misconduct as a public officer. It is our considered view that Atiku gamed the system all through his career in public service, culminating in his founding of the Intel Logistics along with Late Shehu Yar’Adua and some Italians, even while he was still in the employment of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Speaking further, the campaign organization said, “Political Credentials: Most reprehensible was Atiku’s lies about how many times he ran to become the governor of Adamawa or old Gongola state.
“Mr. Presidential candidate, in case you don’t know due to your limited education, you run for an office, only, when you are on the ballot in an election. Your signifying interest in an office does not mean the same as running for the office. From available records, the first time you contested the governorship election in your state was in 1999. Your name entered the ballot for the first time and you won.
“Poor grasp of history: Atiku Abubakar also exhibited poor Knowledge of history when he claimed that Abraham Lincoln, one of America’s famous leaders contested the presidency five to six times before he eventually won.
“This is a beer parlour tale that has been recycled over time. Lincoln contested U.S. presidency twice. He ran in 1860 and 1864 and won both, before he was assassinated on 15 April, 1865.
“The false story about Lincoln’s failed presidential bids sprang from his previous failed state and national elections, from his state of Illinois. They were not the same as America’s presidential election.
“According to historians, Lincoln lost his first election in 1832 for Illinois state legislature. In 1834, he ran again and won.

“In 1843 he ran for Congress. He lost. Three years after in 1846, Lincoln ran for Congress again – this time he won and went to Washington. From established history, in 1848, Lincoln ran for re-election to Congress and lost. In 1854, he ran for Senate of the United States. He lost. Lincoln also made another failed bid for U.S. Senate from Illinois in 1858. He lost to Democrat Steven Douglas.
“Our conclusion is that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is ill-prepared to be President of Nigeria if he could bungle a Television interview that was planned well ahead of the day and time the duo of Dr. Reuben Abati and Ms. Tundun Abiola conducted it. We expected the PDP presidential candidate to be well informed on any issue before coming on national television to expose himself to avoidable ridicule.”

Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Tinubu Only Desperate To Win Election, Doesn't Care If Decision Was Right Or Wrong – Ruling APC Chieftain

23 July 2022 - 9:15am

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) In Adamawa State, Vrati Nzonzo, has added his voice in rejecting the party’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
Nzonzo lambasted the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, for undermining the interest of Christians in northern Nigeria.

He said the decision to adopt a fellow Muslim as a running mate by the presidential candidate of the APC, Tinubu may have grave consequences for the party, amongst northern Christians.
In an interview with journalists, Nzonzo, who is also vying for a seat in the National Assembly, vehemently condemned Shettima's selection as a fellow Muslim, as it amounted to insulting the sensibilities of Christians in Nigeria.
He said, "Let me be as blunt as I can be; I'll not hesitate to show my displeasure over the decision of my party, the APC, to make our presidential ticket a religious affair.
"Making it a Muslim-Muslim affair has brought to the fore the issue of religion in our politics in Nigeria. Tinubu has through his scheming for the ticket promised to pick a northern Muslim as running mate. He openly said he needs to bring a Muslim VP from the North to win.
"So, 'ab initio', he did not paint the picture of competence as he would later want us to believe; he painted the picture of religion. The governor of Kano (Abdullahi Ganduje) was heard saying before it happened that Tinubu has promised to give them a Muslim VP from the North. Several other notable names have been corroborated.”
"Does it mean Tinubu is not Muslim enough; are we having two types of Muslims or what is the issue?" Nzonzo probed.
He maintained that the controversial ticket was capable of truncating the party's chances in the North.
"Why this issue has caused more damage than good is because for Tinubu is all about winning election, without recourse to whether it is right or not. Now what becomes of people like me who are Christians and candidates on the APC platform? Are we now saying Christian votes don't matter, if they don't, are you now not telling them not to vote for me?
"Because I'm in APC and my party has refused to recognise or to be fair to my faith and it's people in Northern Nigeria. And it's not only me, a lot of other contesting Christian candidates of the Christian stock will also be victims", he lamented.
Nzonzo, however, pleaded with the electorates across the country who may have been irked by the choice not to reject other APC candidates, "because it won't be fair to punish us for Tinubu's sins,” he said.

Court Orders Federal University In Bayelsa To Pay Lecturer N4million Withheld Allowances Within 30 Days

23 July 2022 - 9:01am

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), sitting in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital has ordered the Federal University, Otuoke, to pay the sum of N3,664,119.00 as the total sum of money owed a lecturer, Dr. Etumudon Asien, for his excess allowances from 2013 to 2017.
The court also ruled that the university should pay him 30% interest per annum on the sum owed from October 2019 until the debt is liquidated and N500,000 as damages.

The Presiding Judge of the Court, Justice B. A Alkali, said from every available evidence, both documentary and oral, he was satisfied that the claimant was entitled to earn his excess workload allowance from 2003 to 2017 academic sessions.
The claimant, Dr. Etumudon Asien, a lecturer at the Federal University, Otuoke, had in a suit No, NICN/YEN/54/2019, filed a complaint according to Order 3 Rule 2 of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (Civil Procedures) Rules 2017 on the 13th November 2019.
Among other things, the Claimant prayed the court to rule against Defendant, "that the sum of N3,662,119.00 (Three Million, Six Hundred and Sixty-Two Thousand, One Hundred and Nineteen Naira) only being my Earned Income Allowance for Excess Workload for 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 Academic Sessions respectively recently approved and paid by the Federal Government which sum the Defendant has refused to pay to me."
Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice Alkali said it was worrisome and despicable that the defendant (FUO) used the lecturer for the job and refused to pay him, adding that he was employed by the Federal Government through the university and not by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
He said, "More so, the Defendant, being an academic institution cannot function without staff which will put its functions into effect. The Claimant is an employee of Defendant, not ASUU.
"A clinical perusal of Exhibit DW001, particularly a letter signed by the Director of Tertiary Education, reveals that the Federal Government released the sum of N25 Billion Earned Allowances for the Federal Universities from 2009 – 2016.
"It is never in dispute that the Claimant is an academic staff of the Defendant. DW1 stated under cross-examination that each university submitted its claims to the Federal Government before the Earned Excess Allowances were paid and that the claims were based on the numbers of those who submitted their Earned Excess Allowances Forms. The Claimant, not being a member of ASUU submitted his forms to Godfrey Okon who was designated by bursar to collect the forms from non-members of ASUU.
"Flowing from the foregoing, I am of the firm stance that not being a member of ASUU cannot be a premise to render the Claimant unqualified to claim his Earned Excess Workload Allowances for 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 academic sessions.
"It is worrisome and indeed despicable that the Defendant, having used the Claimant to work, thereafter collected his entitlement from the Federal Government but turned around to deny the Claimant his hard earned entitlement. That is height of wickedness and clannishness.
"On the whole, it is my finding that the Claimant has proved his case to entitle him to the reliefs sought, I grant the Claimant’s reliefs as follows:
"One, I order the Defendants to pay to the Claimant the sum of N3,664,119.00 (Three Million, Six Hundred and Sixty-Four Thousand, One Hundred and Nineteen Naira) only being the Claimant’s Earned Income Allowance for Excess Workload for the 2013/2014, 2014/2015,2015/2016 and 2016/2017 Academic Sessions respectively recently approved and paid by the Federal Government which sum the Defendant has refused to pay to the Claimant.
"Secondly, I award the sum of N500,000. 00 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) only being general damages for unlawfully withholding the Claimant’s earned Allowance.
"Thirdly, I award 30% interest per annum on the sum owed from October, 2019 until the debt is liquidated. Without prejudice to the Defendant’s right of appeal against the judgment of this Court, I order that all the terms of this judgment be complied with within 30 days. Judgment is hereby entered accordingly."
In his reaction to the judgment, counsel to the claimant, Barrister Charles Onyebukwa, expressed delight at the epic judgement, saying he was not surprised at the outcome given the documentary evidence.
He said, "It is a very good one, right from time every one should know what the judgement was going to look like because you can’t use someone to work and refuse to pay him his allowance.
"The university is notorious for some of these cases, I have won over six cases against them that bother on some anomalies and there are more cases against them. This is reckless."

Everything I Have Done In Life Is By Accident Except Farming – Ex-President, Obasanjo Admits

23 July 2022 - 6:14am

Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said that most of his life accomplishments, including his emergence as both a military Head of State and President of Nigeria, have come by accident.
He noted that the only thing which was not an accident for him was farming.

Obasanjo’s eight-year civilian rule between 1999 and 2007 laid the foundation for the economic recession and political instability which the country is still grappling with.
His tight-fist and sit-tight leadership made him attempt a third term in office which was truncated by the National Assembly, opinion leaders and public outcry across the country.
Obasanjo was an ex-military Head of State before he was elected as a civilian President in 1999.
Apart from his stints as Nigeria's leader, he is reputed for being passionate about farming and since the end of his second tenure in 2007, he has retired to his Obasanjo Farm in Ota, Ogun State.
While appearing on a live radio interview with Segun Odegbami in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday, the former President said he was always proud to be addressed as a farmer.
The host of the show had asked Obasanjo to speak about what he termed his “romance with farming.”
He said, “I don’t like the word you used, “romance with farming.”. I am a farmer. What do you mean by romance? Everything I have done in my life is by accident. The only thing that is not accidental is farming. Every other thing that I’ve been is by accident. And you called that romance? No; What do you mean by romance?
“You know my beginning. I was born and bred in a village. I went to school by accident. My father just said, “Won’t you do something different?” So I went into farming.
“When you look at countries that have made it, they developed on agriculture. First, for the purpose of food security; second, for the purpose of processing what they get from their farms, which is the beginning of industrialisation. Third, to give it out as export, which is for the purpose of foreign exchange; and fourth, as a means of generating employment for the youth.”
Meanwhile, Obasanjo advised Nigerian youths to take over leadership positions right now.

I Didn’t Lead Thugs To Attack, Burn Houses In Free Trade Zone Resettlement Communities – Lagos Resident, Ibile

23 July 2022 - 6:10am

A Lagos State resident, Saheed Mosadoluwa, more commonly called Ibile, has denied reports that he invaded Yegunda, Abomiti and Eyin-Osa development areas with thugs.
The development areas/zones, made up of over 300 communities, were reportedly resettled on the land by the state government after they gave up their land for a state project.
However, last Saturday, hoodlums stormed the communities on Saturday, July 16, to sack residents.

They were said to have set three thatched houses on fire, vandalise several buildings and injured residents, who were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
The hoodlums stole rams and motorcycles as several people were dispossessed of their phones and money.
On Wednesday, the council of chiefs, resettlement committee members and community youths took to the streets to protest the attack.
The protesters, who gathered at the Ilamija Junction, Epe, lamented the brutalisation and loss of property during the attack.
They accused Ibile and one Otunba of being behind the attack.
The Odofin of Epe and Chairman of Eyin-Osa Resettlement Committee, High Chief Olatunde Oluwo, said the land, measuring about 800 hectares, was statutorily awarded to them by the Lagos State Government.
However, Ibile in a statement sent to SaharaReporters denied the accusation, saying he never hired hoodlums to invade the communities.
"I will never storm anywhere with pitchfork; not going to be in field battle with anyone; Olatunde  Oluwo fronting for the Oloja Epe knows that he is part of those who formed a group of land grabbers to harass and intimidate others who they jointly don't have land on that ressetlement land. Oluwo and co are planning  to set me up, I want to assure them that they cannot stop the legal framework in securing justice for the voiceless of the Parapo of (Abomiti, Yeguda and Eyin-Osa),” he said.
“The game of framing people up with police would not work. We would explore ADR to see those who are there to play game. Where are the burnt houses as it was reported? Who burnt them?
“In the first place, who is attempting to forcefully take what doesn't belong to him? Ordinarily, I wouldn't have responded to the report but I just have to, so as to keep the record straight. I read in the news and base on available documents In 2006, when Lekki Free Zone kicked off, about three communities got affected, and they are Abomiti, Yeguda & Eyin-Osa, and the state government allocated another land, which is 10% of what the government compulsorily acquired for the displaced communities elsewhere for their resettlement, years after, some Lagos State Government officials, and two traditional rulers in Epe and Ogun State, are now making attempt to hijack and convert to theirs, without recourse to the real beneficiaries so as to start selling through some real estate companies.”
“Having noticing this, the recognised Chairman of the Free Trade Zone Parcel B Resettlement Communities, Chief Obafemi Onayemi Obajimi (Baale Onigbagbo) and other family representatives of Abomiti, Eyin-Osa, Yeguda-Parapo raised an alarm over the moves made by Surveyor Olusegun Awokoya who the oppressed communities believed was working for Mrs Lola Akande, the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperative, in collaboration with Oba Kamarudeen Animashaun, the Oloja of Epe conniving with one Oba Ganiyu Olusegun Awokoya aka {Alhaji White}, the Onirete of Irete in Ogun State, to convert the entire Abomiti, Yeguda & Eyin-Osa resettlement land for Kickbacks.
“Chief Onayemi and the concerned leaders of the three communities therefore wrote protest letters to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, the attorney general of the state and Mrs Lola Akande led ministry of commerce, industry and cooperative. The victims also wrote to the above mentioned Monarchs with no response, rather, Ahaji White was threatening them with all sorts of unimaginable things and even started looking for ways to set me up by burning their hoot on land to claim Ibile did that.
“Just yesterday, I learnt that Mrs Lola Akande-led Ministry of Commerce responded to the protest letter earlier written to the ministry by the displaced communities for Parcel B and Free Trade Zone where they advised that the victims should speak with one of our fathers in temple of justice Lanre Ogunlesi, SAN who they claimed their own factor of the communities did not engage as their Lawyer.  I read another letter that was sent across to Lanre Ogunlesi, SAN so as to stop parading himself as the lawyer of the entire displaced communities.
“One thing that people do not actually understand is the fact that Mr Ibile is an individual who is not a lawyer and there is a Law Firm called Ibile Partner, whenever that the firm name got mentioned people believe they are talking of Mr Ibile.  Why are they trying to crucify Ibile partners for taking up legal framework for the displaced free zone communities that decided to engage Ibile Partner?”

Canada Denies Nigerian Musician, Yemi Alade Visa Over Fears ‘She Won’t Leave The Country’

23 July 2022 - 5:59am

Popular Nigeria-born musician, Yemi Alade, and her music band have been denied Canadian visa over fears that she and her crew may not leave the country after their performance.
According to reports released by Le Devoir, a French newspaper published and distributed in Canada, the singer won’t be performing at a Festival’s final closing ceremony slated for Sunday.

The 33-year-old Afropop star is said to be one of the headliners of the Festival international Nuits d’Afrique.
Commenting on the development, Suzanne Rousseau, the festival co-founder, said the visa denial was due to financial reasons, and for fears that the group wouldn’t leave Canada.
“Finally, we got an answer saying the musicians were refused, saying they have to guarantee that they have enough financial means that will make them go back to their country,” she said.
With Yemi’s absence, Suzanne has stated that the singer would have to be replaced at the festival by Sampa The Great, a Zambian-born Australia-based singer.

How Can Tinubu Whom I Didn’t Step Down For Now Become My Candidate? – Pastor Bakare Denies Endorsing APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket

23 July 2022 - 5:41am

Tunde Bakare

The General Overseer of Citadel Global Community Church formerly known as Latter Rain Assembly, Lagos, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has denied reports that he endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.
Bakare in a statement debunked the insinuations that he was working against the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on the Muslim-Muslim ticket by Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima.

The former APC presidential aspirant described the allegations as absolute lies.
“My attention has been drawn to the viral but concocted and ridiculous statements credited to me, by some unscrupulous writers and bloggers. Amongst other things, I was quoted to have said that the agitations by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) were ploys by the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to force a weak candidate on APC,” he said.
“In addition to this, I was alleged to have said that CAN wanted to lure APC into presenting a weak candidate. The spurious writers also alleged that I stressed that Christians are righteous people who behave like Christ, and that CAN are politicians who behave like PDP.
“As if the poorly strewn lies were not enough, I was quoted as saying that Tinubu is my candidate. Isn’t this the same Tinubu that I announced to all and sundry at the APC Presidential Convention that I was not stepping down for? He has suddenly become my candidate.
“I wish to state unequivocally that the statements are absolute lies. There was nowhere I granted anyone any interview or preached on any platform, where I said the ludicrous statements. I challenge anyone who is in possession of the video or audio file of the statements to please put it in the public space.”
Bakare urged Nigerians to disregard the statements, claiming it did not in any way represent his position.

Two Nigerian Women Arrested With 700g Of Heroine In India.

23 July 2022 - 5:32am

There Is Nothing Like ‘Leaders Of Tomorrow,’ It Is Now – Obasanjo Urges Nigerian Youths To Take Over Government

23 July 2022 - 4:11am

Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked Nigerian youths not to abandon the country to “the old generation of leaders.”
Obasanjo asked the youths to hold their future in their hands with a firm belief that “today is our day”, as against the famous cliché that youths are the leaders of tomorrow, saying the tomorrow may never come.

He claimed some corrupt leaders would destroy the so-called tomorrow if the younger generation failed to rise and take their future in their hands.
In contrast, Obasanjo was a tight-fist and sit-tight leader who ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 and wanted a third term bid but he was prevented by the National Assembly, opinion leaders and public outcries.
His government, marked by corruption, political killings and lack of accountability, laid the foundation of the economic crisis and political instability which the country is still grappling with 23 years later.
The former president, spoke on Saturday, during a special interview with former Super Eagles star, Segun Odegbami, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Fielding questions from Odegbami, Obasanjo said, “My advice for Nigerian youths is, never let anybody tell you that you are the leaders of tomorrow. If you wait for tomorrow before you take over leadership, that tomorrow may not come. They will destroy it.
“This is the time; youths get up and make it happen.”

Court Refuses To Accept Governor Umahi As Senatorial Candidate In 2023 Elections, Orders Fresh Poll

23 July 2022 - 2:27am

Governor Dave Umahi

A Federal High Court in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, has thrown out a suit filed by the governor of the state, Dave Umahi, asking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise him as an All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate.
In its ruling delivered on Friday, the court recognised Ann Agom-Eze, who came second in the May 28 senatorial primary for Ebonyi South.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the court, however, ordered INEC to conduct a fresh primary within 14 days for the district.
Umahi’s counsel, Roy Nweze, had filed a suit against INEC at the Federal High Court, asking the court to compel the electoral body to recognise him as the senatorial candidate for the district.
Austin Umahi, brother to the governor, was declared the winner of the APC senatorial ticket for Ebonyi South.
According to NAN, another primary was held on June 9, during which Austin withdrew, and the Ebonyi governor reportedly contested unopposed and won.
However, although the APC had listed Dave Umahi as its senatorial candidate for Ebonyi North, he was excluded when INEC published the list of candidates for the 2023 elections.
Reacting to the development, Nnaemeka Nwonwu, who is counsel to Agom-Eze, expressed satisfaction over the judgment.
“Yes, the court has ordered APC to conduct a fresh primary to ratify the candidacy of our client, Ann Agom-Eze, who took the second position as the governor’s younger brother has withdrawn,” Nwonwu said.
“The court has given 14 days from today, Friday, to conduct a fresh primary for the zone.”

Ukraine Invasion: European Union To Replace Gas From Russia With Nigeria’s

23 July 2022 - 2:26am

The EU Delegation to Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) made the disclosure.

The Deputy Director-General, Department for (Energy), European Commission, Matthew Baldwin, confirmed this to newsmen in Abuja, Daily Post reports.
Baldwin is in Nigeria to meet government officials and private sector players, including key stakeholders in the energy sector.
The official admitted that Europe is in a tight spot, following the war the instability in its gas market and the threat of cutting off supply.
“We have launched the energy platform task force and the primary goal is to reach out to our reliable partners such as Nigeria to replace the gas from Russia”, he said.
The EU had advised member states to reduce gas consumption by 15 per cent as it warned that a complete shutdown of Russia’s supply was possible.

Local Councils Ask Court To Jail Minister Of Interior, Aregbesola Over Marriage Registry Tussle

23 July 2022 - 2:25am

Rauf Aregbesola

The Federal High Court in Lagos State has granted an ex parte application authorising commencement of committal proceedings against the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola.
The plaintiffs, through their lawyer, Roger Adedimeji, are seeking an order to jail the minister for the alleged disobedience to a December 8, 2021 court judgment, restraining the Ministry of Interior from further operating the Federal Marriage Registry, Imo State and others.

The lawyer told the court that after the bailiff of the court sealed the Federal Marriage Registry, Imo State, as ordered by the court, officials of the Ministry of Interior went to unseal the facility and continued their operations.
The plaintiffs are Eti-Osa Local Government Council of Lagos State; Egor Local Government Council of Edo State; Owerri Municipal Local Government Council Imo State; and Port Harcourt City Local Government Council Rivers State.
Listed as defendants were; the Minister of Interior, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and a contractor, Anchor Dataware Solutions Limited.
In their ex parte application taken before Justice Daniel Osiagor on July 8, 2022, the plaintiffs prayed the court “for an order of committal to prison of the 1st defendant (Aregbesola), having disobeyed the order of this honourable court made on December, 8, 2021, compelling him to stop contracting federal marriage registry in the marriage district (local government councils) except the Ikoyi and Abuja Federal Marriage Registry.”
After listening to the plaintiffs’ counsel, Justice Osiagor granted leave to the four local government councils to commence committal proceedings against Aregbesola.
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos had in 2021 perpetually restrained the Nigerian government through the Minister of Interior from further contracting marriages under the Marriage Act, 2004 within four LGAs in the four states.
The four plaintiffs had dragged the defendants to the court, raising a single issue for the court to determine.
They submitted that by virtue of a 2004 judgment of the same Federal High Court delivered by Justice Oyindamola Olomojobi, particularly Section 7.1(5) and paragraph 1(i) of the 4th Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and Section 30 (1) of the Marriage Act that “registration of marriages is the exclusive reserve of the Registrar of the Marriage District (Local Government Councils in Nigeria) and in the instant case, the plaintiff”.
They also contended that the Minister of Interior can only grant licenses (and cannot celebrate or contract marriages) which the registrar or a recognized minister of some religious denomination can act on to contract marriage between the specific persons named in the licence.
