A former Niger Delta warlord, Asari Dokubo has claimed the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, should be in jail for investing Anambra State funds in his family business during his tenure as the state's governor.

Obi had been accused of investing $30 million of Anambra State funds in a company owned by his family.

The former Niger Delta militant leader said this in a viral video.

He said, “In a normal country, Peter Obi is supposed to be in jail for investing state money in a family business and failed.”

Recall that Dokubo recently described the Labour Party’s presidential candidate as a glorified “Yahoo Yahoo boy” (fraudster).

He urged Nigerians not to vote for the former Anambra State governor during the 2023 presidential election.

Dokubo had stressed that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate was not fit for the highest political office in the country.

 

Meanwhile, Peter Obi denied any involvement in corruption during an interview in which he was asked why he invested $30 million of Anambra State funds in a company owned by his family.

He denied this in response to a question by Kadaria Ahmed, host of ‘The Candidates’, a presidential town hall co-production between Daria Media and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), with support from the MacArthur Foundation, held in Abuja recently.

He claimed the company in question belonged to his parents, and that he had no dealings in it after he became a public officer.

“I brought International Breweries into Nigeria and as a Governor of a state, they built a greenfield facility in the state and they came to me and said ‘as our partner, we want you to own 15 percent of this company’, and I said to them ‘No, right now, I am the Governor of a state. I know the future of this brewery, and I want the state to own 10 per cent and since I’m no longer involved in the company, they can own five per cent’. I put in $30million of state money there, it’s now worth $100million and it’s still there. No other state in this country has such investment.

“Personally, I have no investment; not even one Naira. Go to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) today, if you will see Peter Obi as owner of one share; it doesn’t exist. Next is a family company started by my own parents and as their child, I ran it at a time, and when I became Governor, I had nothing to do with it till today.

“I also invested $50 million of Anambra State money in the power sector. I invested several billions in banks, including banks where I have shares. I was investing for the future of the state; it doesn’t matter whether I have shares or not. If I had the opportunity to build the future of the state, wouldn’t I have done that?”

However, Charles Soludo, the state governor, has denied that the state’s investment in the brewery is now worth $100 million.

The Taraba State Police Command said it had deployed personnel to Manya and Sabongida Kpasimbe communities in the Takum Local Government Area of the state after reported attacks by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

 

The Command said that nobody was killed during the attack. It also noted that no one was missing.

Manya and Sabongida Kpasimbe communities were said to have come under heavy attack early on Sunday morning, forcing residents to flee to Nyivu in the Donga Local Government Area for safety, The PUNCH reports.

 

A member representing Takum I State Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Garba Ajiya, who confirmed the latest attack said no life was lost in the incident.

 

A resident of Manya, Mr Tanko Tsokwa, who spoke to the paper said he fled to Takum town for safety, adding that the attackers invaded the community and started shooting around 5.30 am.

 

“They came in large numbers in the company of cows and started shooting sporadically. Luckily enough, we were able to escape through the river and cross over to Nyivu.

 

“I can’t confirm any casualty, but many people, especially women, and children are missing,” he said.

 

Ajiya, while confirming the attack, said his village, Sabon-Gida Kpashimbe, was also attacked but no life was lost.

 

The lawmaker said, “Yes, they attacked and burnt houses in Manya and my village Sabon-Gida Kpashimbe, but no life was lost. I was told they have proceeded to Kwesati in the neighbouring Ussa Local Government Area.

 

“At present, 21 villages in my constituency have been sacked by the attackers who have now occupied the communities and are feeding on people’s farms.

 

“They have converted some of the houses that were not burnt to their houses where they are staying and committing these atrocities.

 

“I want to call on the government to provide immediate relief to the IDPs to address the humanitarian situation in areas under attack and take steps to end the killings.”

 

Speaking on the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Gambo Kwache, said more police personnel have been deployed to the communities to ensure there is peace in the affected area.

 

“We have made a deployment to the area and our men are on the trail of the attackers,” she said.

 

It was gathered that 120,000 people from communities in Ussa and Takum mostly inhabited by the Kuteb ethnic group have been displaced since January this year following several attacks.

Northern lawmakers in the House of Representatives have allegedly concluded plans to impeach the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, should he fail to support the controversial Water Resources Bill during its second reading, SaharaReporters has learnt.

It was gathered that the Northern lawmakers who are bent on making sure the bill succeeds, have already asked the Clerk of the House to prepare an 'addendum' and plan to take their counterparts from the Southern part of the country unawares, to ensure the bill successfully passes second reading.

 

President Muhammadu Buhari's re-submission of the bill has been strongly and widely rejected by the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere; the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo; the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and Middle Belt Forum.

The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu and a clique of lawmakers in the National Assembly as well as sponsors of the controversial bill, Sada Soli, Chairman, Committee on Water Resources and Hassan Fulata, Chairman, Committee on Rules and Business, have been desperately pushing for the passage of the bill which was rejected by the 8th National Assembly following public outcry.

 

Their relentless campaign to ensure the passage of the bill has fuelled speculations that they have ulterior motives. One of the provisions considered offensive in the bill is that while there is popular agitation for resource control and devolution of powers to the states and local governments, the bill seeks to compel Nigerians to permit and pay taxes to the federal government like oil and gas operators before they drill boreholes in the backyards.

The bill also seeks to cede ownership of waterways, river banks and others to the federal government, allegedly for the resettlement of foreign herdsmen.

 

 

The House of Representatives on June 29, 2022, passed the bill for first reading in what can be described as an ambush of the Southern lawmakers, many of whom were said to be absent at that day's sitting.

A member of the House of Representatives from Sokoto  State who is not comfortable with the bill told SaharaReporters on the condition of anonymity that all plans to smuggle the controversial water resources bill that almost tore the nation apart, through second reading at the House of Representatives have been intensified and concluded by the Northern lawmakers.

"The plan is that if the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, fails back them to succeed in the second reading of the controversial water resources bill, he will be impeached and I can authoritatively tell you that the Clerk of the House has been mandated already to prepare addendum.

“The Presidency is solidly behind this whole arrangement and strong opposition to the reintroduction of the bill to the House will not stop its passage as plans to get it passed this time around have been concluded already. The plot to get the bill passed in the 9th Assembly has the blessing of the President and the leadership of the National Assembly.

"Unlike in the last attempt when the Speaker of House of Representatives played a stabilising role leading to the defeat of the bill, this time around, the threat of impeachment is hanging on Femi Gbajabiamila if he fails to play along.

“The plot to pass the bill was hatched here in Nigeria but was concluded at Mecca during the recent Hajj in Saudi Arabia. And part of the plot is to impeach the Speaker of the House, Gbajabiamila, whom they believe didn’t do much to ensure that the bill was passed before even when he knew the President was interested in the bill.

"They wanted the bill passed for the second reading this past week, but many Southern lawmakers were around and with support from Northern Christian lawmakers, the sponsor and the leadership of the House failed to bring the bill last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. When the bill was passed for the first reading in the House, no member had seen or had a copy of the bill, except those behind it and this prompted the Speaker to direct that every lawmaker should get a copy of the bill to study ahead of the second reading debate and this directive has not been carried out. This is to tell you the bill has a hidden agenda that could tear this nation apart.

“The National Assembly would have gone on vacation, but they are waiting for most of the Southern lawmakers who have made summer travelling arrangements to travel out of the country, then they will strike. They will observe this week; if they can’t pass it because of the large number of Southern and Northern Christian lawmakers at the chamber, the House will be made to convoke an emergency sitting of the House, after the House might have been adjourned for vacation. The Clerk of the House has prepared an addendum to enable the House to reconvene and sit even at night or weekend to consider and pass the controversial bill with or without southern members in attendance.

"My fear is that if the Southern Nigerians fail to rise to the occasion, the bill will pass through as certain interests in the Presidency and core North are bent on passing the bill and have mobilised huge resources to get it done. For me, this is a fight for the soul of Nigeria, because if this bill passes through the second reading, then it’s finished and the crisis that it will trigger in the country can best be imagined. This is how they passed 3% for Host Community Fund in the PIA (Petroleum Industry Act), as against the 5% we collectively agreed. The bill, which was initially introduced and rejected during the 8th Assembly, following public outcry, looks like Rural Grazing Area (RUGA) in disguise with the backing of the Presidency.”

A youth has been allegedly killed by a stray bullet from the South-East security outfit, Ebubeagu at Umuajioma village in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.

 

It was learnt that the Sunday incident happened when some youths in the area started protesting against the presence of the security outfit in their locality.

The youths were said to have been angered by the alleged killing of 14 wedding guests by the security group last week in Otulu, in the Oru East Local Government Area of the state. 

Some of them were said to have been killed while returning from a traditional wedding in Awomama, with five others still missing at the time of filing this report.

 

A community source from Umunganike, which adjoins Umuajioma told Daily Trust that the incident occurred at about 9 am.

The source said many youths were protesting against the presence of the Ebubeagu outfit in their locality, shouting, “We don’t want Ebubeagu in our community.”

 

Officers at the divisional police headquarters at Ogbuide Road were said to have intervened and calmed the situation, according to eyewitnesses.

 

But the intervention did not stop the youths from hauling stones at the men. 

 

However, the Ebubeagu personnel started shooting in the air to disperse the crowd and a stray bullet was said to have hit one of the youths who died on the spot.

FCT Minister, Mohammed Musa Bello

A non-profit organisation, Sterling Centre for Law and Development has sued the Federal Capital Territory Administration to challenge its recent policy banning operations of parks from 7 pm in Abuja. 

The Minister of the FCT, Mohammad Bello recently announced a policy requiring parks in Abuja to close as early as 7 pm and in the same breath banned the sale of alcohol in the parks.

In a statement dated July 25, 2022, and signed by its Executive Director, 'Deji Ajare, the organisation described the ban as unconstitutional. 

It noted that the decision and its enforcement violate the right to freedom of movement of residents of Nigeria's city as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) and the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).  

Sterling Centre for Law and Development has therefore filed an action at the Federal High Court in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1133/2022 to challenge the proprietary of the policy and decision of the Federal Capital Territory Administration. 

The case, which was assigned to Court 3 of the Federal High Court with the Hon. Justice A.R. Mohammed presiding, is slated for hearing on August 4, 2022.

The statement read, "The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory recently gave marching orders to the Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement Unit of the FCTA to enforce a 7pm closing order on parks and recreational gardens within the FCT. This directive was made known to the public by the Senior Special Assistant on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement to the Minister of the FCT, Ikharo Attah. 

"According to the Minister the decision to enforce the 'park policy' is to bring about conformity to the policy which is concerned with sanity. Sterling Law Centre is concerned that this decision and the enforcement of same violates the right to freedom of movement of residents of the FCT which is guaranteed in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) as well as the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).  

"The directive also violates the rights of residents to freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association and the right to economic, social and cultural development which are rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.  

"Nigeria has domesticated the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) and is a signatory to the ICCPR, and it is expected to uphold the highest standards in human rights protection and promotion, but it is doing the opposite by denying residents of the Federal Capital Territory their rights to peacefully assemble and associate with others.  

"The Constitution and International law only permit certain restrictions on the right to freedom of movement, that is, if they are clearly prescribed by law and strictly necessary and proportional to protect a legitimate objective. 

"Unfortunately, the FCT Administration is acting without any lawful authority and has not disclosed any reason for its harsh, rash and retrogressive decision, thus leaving sane members of the public to conclude that this action is nothing more than a mere morality policing-imposing a personal standard of morality on society- a policy approach which the FCT administration under Mallam Muhammad Musa Bello has persistently championed with its attack in previous years on places of relaxation and the indiscriminate arrest of women at night under the pretext that they are sex workers, having failed in these previous attempts, as the courts have consistently ruled that these actions were unlawful and unconstitutional."

Family members of the abducted passengers of the Abuja-Kaduna train on Monday morning besieged the entrance of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Abuja, demanding government intervention in the release of the victims.

 

The protesters who started the protest as early as 6 am lamented that the abductors demanded a ransom of N100 million for each of the victims, which they do not have, while those who even have the ransom were blocked from paying it to secure the freedom of their loved ones from the kidnappers’ den.

The protesters carried placards with different inscriptions including hashtag “#FreeKadunaTrainAttackVictims.” Some of the inscriptions read, “Mr. President please help us,” “President Buhari Pls help us,” “We hardly sleep with our two eyes closed,” “The victims are dying in captivity,” “Our blood pressure keeps on rising every day,” amongst others, demanding an urgent intervention from the Nigerian government.

 

Despite the early morning rain in the area, the protesters, made up of old men and women and youths vowed never to leave the ministry until they got assurances from the ministry or the government met their demands.

 

Speaking with BBC Pidgin, one of the protesters who simply identified himself as Aruwa, said, “I came here because of my sister who was inside that train that left Abuja for Kaduna. We are here at the Ministry of Transport because they are the ones in charge of everything.

 

“My sister was coming back from a wedding ceremony when they kidnapped from that train and took them into the bush and since the time they were kidnapped, the only thing we see yesterday is that they (the kidnappers) are threatening to kill them That is why we all gathered here to tell the ministry of transport so that they can tell the President to help us release these people.

 

“It has been very difficult for me. My sister is a mother of five and how we have been going with the children, only God is helping us. It is like a nightmare for us. We no longer sleep. Even to eat is difficult for us.

 

“We heard that some people contributed money to go and pay the kidnappers to release them but the security people stopped them from going.

 

“We don’t even have the money to pay. Where do we get N100 million? Even if I sell myself, I won’t get N100 million. They stopped the people who have the money from paying, we that don’t have the money, what is our fate? It means that if they (the kidnappers) make do with their threat, they will eliminate all our people.

 

“All we are begging the government is to come to our rescue. Let them come to the rescue of these our loved ones in that bush. Our hope lies with the government because we don’t have anywhere else to go. If the President wants to do something he can still do something. All the people in the federal government, you are hearing and seeing us and the punishment. Particularly, a two-year-old girl who is there and suffering under the rain and under the sun.

 

“We will be here, come rain, come sun. What we will eat, the government will provide for us but we will not leave here until we hear from the President himself.”

 

Other protesters lamented, asking the Nigerian government to secure the release of the victims who were kidnapped on March 28 this year when terrorists attacked the train bound for Kaduna from Abuja.

Suspected gunmen on Monday attacked Okuta Elerinla Division of the Nigeria Police in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.

 

Odunlami Funmilayo, Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in a statement.

The gunmen during the attack killed a police inspector on duty identified as Temenu Boluwaji.

 

The statement read, “On the 25th July, 2022 around 0100 am, hoodlums attacked OKUTA ELERINLA DIVISION in Akure.

 

“Policemen who were at alert and alive to their duty repelled them accordingly and the miscreants were unable to gain entrance into the station.

 

“During the cross fire, one of our gallant station guards AP.207538 0INSPR. TEMENU BOLUWAJI was hit by a bullet, he later died on his way to the hospital.

 

“The Commissioner of Police CP OYEYEMI ADESOYE OYEDIRAN psc,fsi, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and ensure the perpetrators are arrested.

 

“He is also using this medium to encourage the people of the state to go about their lawful duty without fear, as the days of these criminals are numbered.”

 

The incident comes a few weeks after terrorists attacked Saint Francis Catholic Church in the Owo Local Government Area of state, killing more 40 congregants and injuring many others.

Suspected terrorists on Sunday killed a driver with the Katsina State Transport Authority (KTSTA), Nasiru Yusha’u, after the victim’s vehicle ran into the gunmen along the Katsina-Jibia Road.

 

A resident of Daddara village close to the scene of the incident told Channels TV that the bus was attacked around noon on Sunday.

He said Yusha’u saw the gunmen and attempted to turn around but the terrorists caught up with him and shot him dead.

After killing the driver, the terrorists reportedly stole mobile phones, money and other valuables from the passengers.

The 32-seater bus occupied predominantly by traders was on its way from Jibia Market to Katsina when the terrorists opened fire on them, eyewitnesses said.

The General Manager of Katsina State Transport Authority, Haruna Musa Rugoji has also confirmed the incident.

He disclosed that the deceased took passengers from Katsina to Jibia. Then, from Jibia also, he took passengers to Katsina and it was during the return trip that the incident took place at Farun Bala.

“The driver was trying to turn the vehicle with the passengers when he saw the four bandits crossing the road at that particular community. They shot him dead. Maybe they thought that he would go back and give information.

 

“There was no kidnapping intention by the bandits because they didn’t kidnap anybody. They only shot the driver and collected cash and some phones from the passengers. It wasn’t a target.

“I went to the scene and I was among those that took the corpse from the scene to General Hospital Katsina now to Musawa, the hometown of the deceased, for burial,” he said.

The African Action Congress (AAC) has said it will take power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections.

According to the party, Nigerians are tired of being put in abject poverty and tortured by President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

The party also said it has unique political qualities as an advantage over the so-called big political parties and would use it to take over the leadership of the country in the forthcoming elections.

 

The National Organising Secretary of the party, Oshiokhue Philip Ikpeminoghena stated this on Sunday during a general meeting of the party in Abuja.

 

He said the essence of the meeting was to have a synergy and harmonise all groups and leaders in the six Area Councils, wards and polling units in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in preparation for 2023.

 

He explained further that the meeting was also aimed at pulling stakeholders together to have a broad conversation on challenges and the way forward for a better outing in the next elections.

 

Oshiokhue maintained that the party has enjoyed organic grassroots support and human resources that have given it an edge over other political parties including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

 

He said, "We possess what the so-called big political parties do not have, the APC and PDP of this world. We have the human resources and grassroots support and it is organic. The support we have enjoyed over time is organic.

 

"We were four months when 2019 elections came up and we performed so well even though the result given to us was allotted, we know we did better than what was given to us; however, the outing was good and we want to make it better this year.

 

"Nigerians are tired of a system which has kept them in abject poverty. The system which no Nigerian can be proud of today. We are not going to wrestle power from them, we are taking power from them. We will take it because Nigerian masses are vouching for us."

 

On his part, the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Femi Adeyeye said it is glaring that the APC and PDP cannot turn things around and change the country for the better.

 

He noted that the two political parties APC and PDP as well as their appendage which Peter Obi represents were just "packaged fraud".

 

Adeyeye said, "It has become clearer these two political parties - APC and PDP and their appendage which Obi represents now cannot change anything. It is even becoming clearer that these people are just 'packaged fraud' and in the coming days, you will see a lot.

 

"We have resolved that a lot of work still needs to be done at the grassroots level. We understand that Nigerians are tired but they need to channel their anger toward the correct direction.”

 

He said the party would engage in the drive to ensure more Nigerians get Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), adding that there would be campaigns, rallies and recruitment of members into the party.

A United States-based Nigerian social critic, Prof Farooq Kperogi has described President Muhammadu Buhari as the most successful hypnotist, saying even Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany does not come close. 
Kperogi said many anti-people policies and failures of Buhari's government were met with public silence or even approval in some cases, unlike the experiences of his predecessors. 

On his Twitter handle on Sunday, Kperogi said, "No president in the history of the world has been able to hypnotize citizens of a country with as much roaring success as Buhari has in Nigeria in the last 7+ years. Not even Adolf Hitler comes close.
"For example, like clockwork, every petrol price hike in Nigeria since 1966 used to be met with mass protests, but Buhari jacked up petrol prices multiple times by steep margins (the latest being last week) without as much as a whimper from citizens. In fact, Buhari's first petrol price hike was greeted with demonstrations of joy by poor people in the Northwest who threatened to kill anyone who opposed it! That was a first. I called it self-annihilating stupidity. Everyone knows this is because the professional protesters against insensitive government policies are now in gov't.
"That's the danger of leaving civic duties to a self-selected class of people. Monica Bolna’an Dongban-Mensem

The President of the Court of Appeal in Nigeria, Monica Dongban-Mensem, has lost his son, Prince Paeke Shapnaan.
Paeke died in his sleep on Saturday.
The deceased was 38 years old and recently just got married, SaharaReporters learnt.

He studied Mathematics and was billed to start his graduate studies in Maritime studies on the 13th of September, 2022.
The tragic incident comes 11 years after another son of the Appeal Court President, Samson Kwapda’as, was killed by a hit-and-run driver.
The then 32-year-old student had graduated with a law degree from the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Plateau state, and had gone to the capital city to get his certificate.
“I gave up sleep, hoping that my son will walk through the door and give me a big hug. I also left a plate of food on the table hoping he would return hungry,” Dongban-Mensem had told BBC in an interview.
“My son wanted to be the best prosecutor in the world but died like a chicken on the street after being knocked down. He broke his two legs and neighbours within the area looked the other way as my son groaned in pain, bleeding from one end of the road to the other.
“He gave up the ghost in the pool of his own blood but I am sure he would have survived if he was rushed to the hospital.”

The Nigerian Presidency has reacted to the flogging of abducted Kaduna-Abuja train passengers by terrorists.
The victims were abducted when bandits attacked the Kaduna-bound train on March 28.

Eight passengers were killed during the train attack, while a yet-to-be-confirmed number of persons were kidnapped.
In a viral video lasting two minutes, 50 seconds sent by the terrorists to family members of the abductees on Saturday, the male victims are seen crying as they were being flogged by the terrorists.
As the flogging stopped, female captives came into the frame. One of them cried out and rued voting for President Muhammadu Buhari.
Reacting to the video in a statement on Sunday, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, said the use of violence by ‘terrorists” is not new.
Shehu said President Buhari has gone beyond expectations in supporting security operatives, and he expects results.

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), Sonny Echono, who is a former Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, is not running down the agency through unwholesome practices as alleged, a lawyer, Felix Ayanruoh has said.
Echono was appointed in March by President Muhammadu Buhari as TETFUND boss.

Sources earlier told SaharaReporters that Echono had turned the agency into a fiefdom where contract splitting and padding was the order of the day.
"The situation in TETFUND in less than four months is worrisome; the ES has done what no other chief executive has done in terms of splitting contracts to favour his cronies and fronts. A situation where the ES brags about extensive knowledge of procurement is disgusting. I can say that the rot he perpetuated while he was Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry is what he is repeating here,” one of the sources had said.
"The ES is in the habit of asking for advance payment in dollars before grants are released. You know he was the former PS in the Education Ministry, and he knew most of the Vice-Chancellors of the universities. So it has been business as usual with how these Vice-Chancellors respond to his monetary demands before grants are released.”
“One of the antics of the ES of TETFUND is insisting that most TETFUND projects are executed by firms he recommended. He has a list of firms under his direct control that he uses in executing TETFUND projects.
“There is a list of anointed firms that must execute projects. In some instances, these firms are not qualified and what happens is that they end up engaging firms with capacity but for a lesser fee. One of the federal universities in the Southern part of the country was a case where TETFUND released the sum of 250 million (naira) for constructing twin lecture theatres. The firm that was awarded the contract later engaged another firm for the same project at the sum of 150 million (naira),” another source had noted.
Reacting, Ayanruoh described the allegations as false.
The lawyer described Echono as a true and dedicated civil servant and an epitome of what a public administrator should be.
He said, “Mr. Echono is a testimonial of a dedicated and incorruptible public administrator that our dear nation deserves.  He has not been investigated or questioned of his decades of service to our great nation.
“He inspires governance and administration of all shades of government to action. And while inspiration alone isn’t enough to get the job done, it is a necessary ingredient to begin the hard work.
“His unwillingness to cross the line into the dark side of public administration has touched a fundamental place in the hearts of many who are eager to work with him and believe that public service is not entirely cynical.
“However, it is imperative to state that Mr. Echono turned down an extension offered by the Federal Government as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, the supervisory Ministry of NECO referred to in the article. 
“It is instructive to note that Sony Echono is a true and dedicated civil servant – an epitome of what a public administrator should be. He has traversed public service and propelled successes from the administration of the likes of Akinwumi Adesina the former Minister of Agriculture, Oby Ezekwesili (Madam Due Process) and former Minister of Education among others.

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as "Shi'ites" at the weekend gathered in Abuja to mark Quds Day, a day set aside by the movement in Nigeria in support of the Palestinian struggle.
The movement also used the event to honour

their fallen 'heroes’ and ‘martyrs’ killed by security operatives in Zaria in 2015 by the Nigerian military.
The sect said they would never give up the struggle in demanding justice for the victims and exercising their right to practise their religion.
The event was marked soberly with portrait photographs of the victims including three children of the leader of the movement, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, on display. 
Speaking at the event, the Patron of the Academic Forum of the movement, Prof. Isah Mshelgaru said irrespective of the killings, harassment and intimidation by the Nigerian government and security agencies, the movement would not be forced into silence. 
"It is a day to remember these our heroes and also tell the world that these people that have sacrificed their lives, there are still some other people that are ready to make similar sacrifices until the aims of those people who sacrificed their lives are achieved," he said. 
He lamented the illegal detention of many Shi'ites by security agencies across the country since 2015, adding that the movement would do everything legally possible to ensure their release.
He also added that the sect would sustain the procession and protest against the continued seizure of the passports of their leader, El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat
by the Nigerian government which has prevented the couple from travelling out of the country for medical treatment.
"When Sheik and his wife were detained, we protested for over six years and most of the time on a daily basis. We didn't get tired even when the government was saying we would be tired and abandon the struggle.
"The issue of fighting for our rights is a continuous process and there is no way we will abandon our rights. We will continue to pursue our rights using all legal means until we get our rights. So the protest and all other things will continue," he added. 
Another scholar of the forum, Ahamad Shuaib said the aim of the Nigerian government not to release the passport of their leader was to eliminate him.
"Why will they seize his passport? Seizing his passport, they mean bad for Sheik. Since he has bullets in his body system and bullets emit lead poison and lead is very poisonous. It is the only miracle that has made Sheik to survive till this time. 
"He has stroke twice while in detention without proper care. His wife is suffering from a knee problem and other complications."
He explained that the event was also done in solidarity with the people of Palestine, saying they are being terrorised by the Israeli government with support from the USA.
IMN added that the international community has turned a blind eye to the increasingly transparent reality on the ground for too long.

The Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) has condemned and rejected the recent claim by the Nigerian Government that the planned nationwide protest scheduled for July 26 and 27, 2022 by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in solidarity with the striking workers in public universities and colleges of education is illegal.  
The SPN, in a statement on Saturday signed by its Acting National Chairperson, Abiodun Bamigboye and National Secretary, Chinedu Bosah said rather, it considers the pronouncement of the government, through Mr Lai Mohammed, the Minister for Information and Culture, as "not only illegal but also irresponsible".

"This is because it is an attack on the democratic right to holding a peaceful protest which the irresponsible Buhari government has made necessary by keeping students at home for more than five months," it said. 
It further said, "Again, the NLC being an umbrella body of trade unions which include Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU, Seniors Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU, currently on strikes for months, has the historical responsibility of organising a solidarity action to strengthen the agitations of its affiliates in struggle regardless of whether or not is directly having a pending issue with the government.
"It is in line with this working-class solidarity that SPN being a pro-working people political party reiterates its support to the various, ongoing strike action of the staff unions in universities as well as College of Education Academic Staff Unions (COEASU). We believe that the demands by these striking trade unions are genuine and in the best interest of public education. 
"SPN strongly advocates adequate funding of education that is linked to human development and gives every Nigerian the opportunity to acquire the fullest human development towards the advancement of the productive forces.
"However, it must be stated that this is possible only when the mainstay of the economy and big industries are publicly owned and democratically run and controlled by the working class people. 
"This is in order to guarantee the generation of adequate resources and their judicious use for the benefits of the vast majority. Unfortunately, the Buhari-led government and other sections of the capitalist ruling elite are incapable of adopting this kind of socio-economic arrangement that guarantees free and quality education for all because of their self-serving, parochial looting and profit first interest as well as the lack of objective to industrialize the economy and make it more productive. 
"The uneven and combined development, as well as the looting of public funds, have made it possible for the ruling elite to be insulated from the poor education system as their children get quality education at a more expensive rate in Nigeria and abroad. Hence, the ruling elite are not bothered even if our schools are closed down for 2 years as a result of legitimate strike actions or the education system is embarrassingly poor as it is in the current situation."
According to the SPN, it welcomes the planned mass protest called by the NLC in solidarity with the striking unions scheduled to take place across the 36 states on July 26 and Federal Capital Territory, FCT on July 27, 2022. 
"We strongly feel that this solidarity action is long overdue, and hence we call on the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to take this solidarity action with seriousness in terms of mobilization and commitment," it said. 
"The NLC leadership should not organize this action with levity just like it did with some other past actions without adequate and proper mobilisation. Neither should the planned actions be unjustifiably called off at the eleventh hour."
The socialist party said the January 2022 botched mass action against the planned removal of fuel subsidy emboldened the government and oil marketers to increase fuel price from N165 to between N175 and N220 depending on the location. 
"The same way the strike action called off in September 2020 emboldened the government and electricity companies to increase electricity tariffs 3 times within a year with commitment for 6month periodic increment," it added. 
It, therefore, called on the "Trade Union Congress (TUC) to join the solidarity action in order to provide stronger class solidarity in support of the striking workers and students. It is important to note that it is a consistent struggle that can force the government to meet the demands of education workers and grant concession for more funding to public education". 
It continued, "Therefore, SPN calls on the NLC and TUC to come together for more sustained solidarity mass action including a 48-hour general strike, as the next stage, as a means of mobilising the Nigerian working people and youth not only in support of students and the striking workers but also against all anti-poor policies. 
"These include but not limited to hike in the price of petroleum products, increment in tax, inflation, hike in electricity tariff, underfunding of education and healthcare, casualization and contract staffing, jumbo salaries and perks for top political office holders, fraudulent contract system etc. This is the only way the trade union movement can adequately checkmate government and private sector attacks as well as defend the interest of workers and the masses.
"We call on all pro-labour and pro-students organisations to give active solidarity to this ongoing strike as well as the planned mass protest taking place on July 26 and 27, 2022. 
"Beyond this is the need to note that the continued stay in power by the self-serving capitalist ruling elite is antithetical to the interest of the working masses and the poor. By the logic of the iniquitous capitalist system especially in a neo-colonial economy with a backward ruling elite, ordinary Nigerians will always be subjected to all manners of socio-economic and political attacks. 
"Hence, there is an urgent need for trade unions, pro-masses organisations, and working people to build a pan Nigerian mass working people’s political party which can build a revolutionary mass movement to usher in a socialist change. This is in order to ultimately put the working class people in power and bring about real democracy wherein society will be planned and organized to meet the needs of all."

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has commended the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNHCR) for condemning the arrest of the leader of the separatist group, Nnamdi Kanu, through its International Working Group. 
The group also commended Kanu's international lawyer, Bruce Fein for his efforts in drawing the attention of the body to the plight of the IPOB leader. 

An international Working Group had declared the arrest of Kanu as unlawful and an infringement on his international human rights.
It also called for the immediate release of the IPOB and compensation by the Nigerian and Kenyan governments for the way he was treated. 
The Working Group on arbitrary detention, under the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR), disclosed this in a statement published on its website.
The group comprises scholars and experts who specialise in human rights issues and related laws.
Fein, the American lawyer of the IPOB leader had petitioned the group over an alleged gross violation of his client’s rights.
The UN group in its report also described Kanu’s repatriation from Kenya in June 2021 as “illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional extradition.”
In a statement on Sunday, IPOB commended the Working Group, Fein and everyone working to get victory for the detained IPOB leader. 
The IPOB leader was detained after he was arrested in Kenya and repatriated in June 2021.
He was arrested over his agitation for Biafra and by extension, Nigeria’s breakup.
He has since been detained by Nigeria's secret police, Department of State Services (DSS) and his trial for terrorism-related offences commenced in a Federal High Court in Abuja, the country's capital. 
IPOB, in the statement from its publicity secretary, Emma Powerful on Sunday, said, "We, the global and noble family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the supreme leadership of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu hereby commend Attorney Bruce Fein for the professional job in regards to the recently issued United Nations Opinion, condemning the extraordinary rendition of our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and directing the Government of Nigeria to release him unconditionally and to compensate him.
"In the same vein, we commend all those who quietly labored and assisted in achieving this landmark victory. It is indeed a great milestone for our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB and Biafrans worldwide.
"We also express our profound gratitude to the United Nations and its Working Group for their courage in reaching this decision and issuing an opinion that comports with the tenets of international laws.
"It is our hope that Nigeria, as a member of the United Nations, will take heed and promptly obey and implement the UN directives to the letter. We caution that this is not a Nigerian court order that is often disobeyed without consequences." 
The statement by the working group said, “The Working Group is mindful that article 9 (2) of the Covenant requires that anyone who is arrested is not only informed of the reasons for the arrest but also promptly informed of any charges against them. 
"As explained by the Human Rights Committee in its general comment No. 35, the obligation encapsulated in article 9 (2) has two elements: information about the reasons for the arrest must be provided immediately upon arrest and there must be prompt information about the charges provided thereafter. Failure to do so violates article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 9 of the Covenant, and principle 10 of the Body of Principles, and renders the person’s arrest devoid of any legal basis.
“Consequently, Mr. Kanu’s arrest without an arrest warrant and with no explanation as to the reasons for his arrest violated his rights under article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 9 of the Covenant and principles 2, 4, 10, and 36 (2) of the Body of Principles,” it said.
The UN group in its report also described Kanu’s repatriation from Kenya in June 2021 as “illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional extradition.”
It read, “On 30 December 2021, the Working Group transmitted the allegations from the source to the Governments of Nigeria and Kenya under its regular communications procedure. The Working Group requested the Governments to provide, by 28 February 2022, detailed information about the current situation of Mr. Kanu and to clarify the legal provisions justifying his continued detention, as well as its compatibility with the obligations of Nigeria and Kenya under international human rights law, and in particular with regard to the treaties ratified by the two States. Moreover, the Working Group called upon the Government of Nigeria to ensure Mr. Kanu’s physical and mental integrity.
“On 25 January 2022, the Government of Nigeria submitted a reply in which it stated that, given that the case is on-going in national courts, “any reaction by the Federal Government of Nigeria will be unconscionable.”
“The Working Group regrets that it received no reply from the Government of Kenya and that it also did not seek an extension in accordance with paragraph 16 of Working Group’s methods of work.
“The Working Group has maintained from its early years that the practice of arresting persons without a warrant renders their detention arbitrary. This lacks any valid legal basis under any circumstance.
"Judicial oversight of any detention is a central safeguard for personal liberty and is critical in ensuring that detention has a legitimate basis. In the circumstances attending the detention of Mr. Kanu at an unknown location, the Working Group finds that his right to an effective remedy under article 8 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and article 2 (3) of the Covenant were violated. 
"He was also placed outside the protection of the law, in violation of his right to be recognised as a person before the law under article 6 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and article 16 of the Covenant.
“The Working Group also considers that Mr. Kanu’s time in detention following his arrest constitutes pre-trial detention, which violated the prescriptions of article 9 (3) of the Covenant in so far as Mr. Kanu was not presented before a judicial authority within 48 hours and no individual assessment of the appropriateness of his pre-trial detention took place.
“The source asserts and the Government does not contest that on or about 29 June 2021, Mr. Kanu was subjected to extraordinary rendition to Abuja, Nigeria, with no prior judicial hearing before a judicial or administrative body. The source emphasizes that Mr. Kanu was not given access to counsel and was denied any judicial proceedings all together whilst in Kenya. The source notes that, according to Nigeria’s Attorney General, Mr. Kanu was apprehended and transported to Abuja with the cooperation of Nigerian intelligence officials and Interpol.
“The source claims that, in the present case, there was no fair and public hearing concerning Mr. Kanu’s removal from Kenya to Nigeria. The source stresses that involuntary expulsion to a foreign State without a hearing by judicial authorities does not conform with due process considerations. 
"It is clear from the facts as narrated by the source and not contested by the Government that Mr. Kanu was never presented to a court before leaving Nairobi. Instead, he was unwillingly taken, outside any legal process and without any legal protection. He was forcibly conveyed from Nairobi to Abuja under an arrangement between the Kenyan and Nigerian Governments, and with the cooperation of the Nigerian Intelligence officials and Interpol, as confirmed by Nigeria’s Attorney General.

“As the Working Group has previously observed 9 international law regarding extradition provides procedures that must be observed by countries in arresting, detaining and returning individuals to face criminal proceedings in another country and in ensuring that their right to a fair trial is protected. This is also an explicating obligation arising from article 13 of the Covenant which requires that the person who is to be expelled “be allowed to submit the reasons against his expulsion and to have his case reviewed by, and be represented for the purpose before, the competent authority or a person or persons especially designated by the competent authority”.
The Working Group finds that all these requirements were ignored in the present case and the removal of Mr. Kanu from Kenya amounted to extraordinary rendition.
“Further, the Working Group notes that this was preceded by the secret detention of Mr. Kanu. As the Working Group and other experts have stated regarding State responsibility in the joint study on global practices in relation to secret detention in the context of countering terrorism: Secret detention, involving the denial or concealment of a person’s detention, whereabouts or fate has the inherent consequence of placing the person outside the protection of the law. 
"The practice of “proxy detention”, where persons are transferred from one State to another outside the realm of any international or national legal procedure (“rendition” or “extraordinary rendition”) for the specific purpose of secretly detaining them, or to exclude the possibility of review by the domestic courts of the State having custody of the detainee, or otherwise in violation of the well-entrenched principle of non-refoulement, entails exactly the same consequence. 
"The practice of “proxy detention” involves the responsibility of both the State that is detaining the victim and the State on whose behalf or at whose behest the detention takes place.
“It is aimed at avoiding all procedural safeguards, is not compatible with international law. The Working Group has previously found a violation of article 9 of the Covenant and the detention to be arbitrary where individuals were transferred to another country outside the confines of any legal procedure, such as extradition, were not allowed access to counsel. This is precisely what happened to Mr. Kanu.
“Secret detention, involving the denial or concealment of a person’s detention, whereabouts or fate has the inherent consequence of placing the person outside the protection of the law. The practice of “proxy detention”, where persons are transferred from one State to another outside the realm of any international or national legal procedure (“rendition” or “extraordinary rendition”) for the specific purpose of secretly detaining them, or to exclude the possibility of review by the domestic courts of the State having custody of the detainee, or otherwise in violation of the well-entrenched principle of non-refoulement, entails exactly the same consequence. 
"The practice of “proxy detention” involves the responsibility of both the State that is detaining the victim and the State on whose behalf or at whose behest the detention takes place.
“In the light of the foregoing, the Working Group renders the following opinion: In relation to Kenya and Nigeria; The deprivation of liberty of Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Kenny Okwu-Kanu, being in contravention of articles 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and articles 2, 9, 13, 14, 16, 19 and 26 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, is arbitrary and falls within Categories I, II, III and V.
“The Working Group requests the Governments of Kenya and Nigeria to take the steps necessary to remedy the situation of Mr. Kanu without delay and bring it into conformity with the relevant international norms, including those set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
“The Working Group considers that, taking into account all the circumstances of the case, the appropriate remedy would be for the Government of Nigeria to release Mr. Kanu immediately and for both Governments to accord him an enforceable right to compensation and other reparations, in accordance with international law. In the current context of the global coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and the threat that it poses in places of detention, the Working Group calls upon the Government of Nigeria to take urgent action to ensure the immediate unconditional release of Mr. Kanu.
“The Working Group urges the two Governments to ensure a full and independent investigation of the circumstances surrounding the arbitrary deprivation of liberty of Mr. Kanu and to take appropriate measures against those responsible for the violation of his rights."

The Anambra State Police Command says it killed two suspected gunmen in different operations at Okija in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state at the weekend.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noted that four automatic pump-action firearms, four vehicles, four motorcycles, and other items were recovered from the suspects.

Ikenga stated that police operatives in the state had intensified and improved operational positioning to respond to distress calls.
He said, "Anambra State Security Forces comprising the military and police, neutralized two gunmen, recovered four automatic pump action, one cutlass, one ash colour Lexus jeep 350 with reg. nos KJA- 666HE, one white Toyota Hilux jeep without reg nos., one white Toyota Corolla with reg. nos. HAL- 732RF, one sliver Highlander jeep without reg nos, four motorcycles without reg. nos.
“The recovery followed a distress call at about 9:30 am on 23/7/2022( Saturday) along Onitsha/Owerri expressway junction leading to Okija Nkwo Market, where some hoodlums blocked the road and were robbing/extorting motorists.
“The Joint Forces responded swiftly and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel; neutralised one of the armed men while others escaped the scene with bullet wounds."
Ikenga further disclosed that in another development, police operatives at about 3:30 pm on the same date while on clearance operation, sighted another criminal gang at Nkwo Market Okija, harassing sellers/buyers and residents in the area. 
"The operatives engaged the armed men in a gun duel. One of the suspects was neutralised and two automatic pump action and one machete recovered while others fled the scene.
“No casualty on part of the operatives and the situation has been brought under control. Meanwhile, Operation is still ongoing to apprehend the other fleeing gang members.”
The command's spokesman, however, added that the police commissioner in the state, Echeng Echeng, had charged the operatives of the command to sustain the tempo of its attacks on criminal elements.
He also ordered that patrols be intensified and operational positioning improved to respond to distress calls in the state.

A Nigerian policeman, Inspector Ekemezie Hycient has tendered his resignation over alleged marginalisation and victimisation of the South-East people.
The officer attached to the Inspector General of Police Special Taskforce on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering Unit, Calabar sector in a letter to the police authorities, said he was quitting because “the Nigeria state has been so polarized that foreign machineries (mercenaries) and terrorists have surrounded the whole country, killing the indigenous owners of the land in the name of their Jihad.”

He called on the Nigerian government to immediately release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The letter dated July 14, 2022, reads, “I Ap No. 318093 Inspector Ekemezie Hycient attached to IGP Special Taskforce on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering Unit, Calabar Sector, formally wish to tender my resignation letter to the Nigeria Police Authority. I am a graduate from the renowned Chukwuemka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Political Science Department, I joined the Nigeria Police Force on the 1st day of July 2007.
“I decided to resign my position as an Inspector of the police after my fifteen years of service, my reasons for resignation are as follows: The Nigeria state has been so polarized that foreign machineries (mercenaries) and terrorists have surrounded the whole country, killing the indigenous owners of the land in the name of their Jihad, especially the indigenous people of Biafra IPOB, there is a systematic extermination of the indigenous government, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is undergoing political persecution because he spoke and stood against this shenanigan of the present government in the name of Islamizing the whole country and to hand over the indigenous people land to the Fulanis.
“The Nigeria security forces go about killing innocent people leaving the Fulanis that are killing people everywhere, I can no longer continue to serve the government that cannot guarantee the safety of it’s citizens. The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four fake soldiers.
The police spokesperson in the state, Benjamin Hundeyin, who disclosed this on Twitter, said the suspects were arrested on Sunday.

According to him, they were arrested by officers of Iju Divison led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Gbenga Stephen.
“Officers of Iju Divison led by the DPO, CSP Gbenga Stephen, today at about 1:30am arrested four fake soldiers in the Iju area of Lagos State.
“The fake soldiers who were arrested in a Mazda3 saloon car are Samuel Abel ‘m’ 28, Victor ljeemai ‘m’ 35, Lukman Salabiu ‘m’ 43 and Oyinyechi Macus ‘f’ 30.
“They have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba for further investigation,” the police spokesman said.

The medical treatment of a member of the Nigerian Legion, Koleoso Abayomi shot by lawless policemen attached to the Ogombo Police Division in Lagos, has been taken over by the police authorities.
A source close to the victim disclosed this in a short statement to SaharaReporters.

The development comes days after SaharaReporters exclusively reported how Abayomi, a security officer at Lekki Scheme II Estate was brutalised by policemen and shot in the thigh.
“After Sahara Reporters' publication, Ogumbo Divisional Police Officer (DPO) came here and took full medical responsibility of the shot legion officer,” the source said.
The policemen had accused the victim of delaying and denying them entrance into the estate.
“They wanted to get access to the estate of which the estate has its own policemen working with the legion officer inside the estate.
“On their arrival, the legion officer told them to wait so that he could call the Chief Security Officer but the policemen disagreed and started beating him. In the process, Koleoso was shot in the thigh,” a source had said.
The officers were said to have taken him to a hospital and dropped him at the entrance.
“They were forced by the people in the estate to take him to the hospital but since Friday that they took him to the hospital, they abandoned him there. This is so sad; policemen aren’t expected to behave like hoodlums,” another source had told SaharaReporters.
